|Article:||Saturday training sessions in South park will continue after Xmas, but with the large number of XC races in Jan and Feb, we have only 5 sessions.
Jan 14th, Jan 21st, Jan 28th, Feb 18th, Feb 25th.
As usual, they are designed to complement the Tuesday track sessions. The sessions will start at 10am and last approximately 50 minutes and will move gradually onto more faster based running, including hill repetitions, some steady running up/down hills and of course a more sustained 10-12 minutes timetrial by which you can measure your improvement over the winter. They are obviously great for XC racing, but will help improve your strength and endurance for any running event.
If you are planning on racing half-marathons and are capable of running under 1.35, I suggest that you finish with 2 laps of the park in preparation.
The sessions are suitable for everyone, although if you have had any lower leg injuries (particularly calf or achilles), are new to running hills or are a little unsure what running XC is all about, please talk to Mark before the session starts. If you are new to hills, and want to launch into these sessions in a big way, you should start adding hills to your weekly runs for a few eeks before we start again after the Xmas break.
South Park is now in winter mode and whilst it can be tackled with road shoes, it is best with something with more grip such as off-road, fell, stud or spiked shoes. Obviously, if the ground is frozen, you should think about what you put on your feet, perhaps bringing a few alternatives to the session. As always, if you're going to race in spikes or studs, you should get some practise in them asap and ease the legs into the extra demands they place upon them gradually !
See the weekly HRR events diary for dates/details of each training sessions.
