Frieth Hilly 10K
Date:18 Oct 2009
Full results:

Frieth is a village in the Chilterns about 5 miles west of Marlow. This was the second time this 10K had taken place.

The organisers said the race would involve sections on road, trails and footpaths through woods and fields, including challenging off-road descents and ascents That proved to be very accurate! There's one point where the route that comes out of a wood to go along the side of a field throws you down from 160m to 90m during the course of 0.5K. Then after a flat section along lanes, there is the inevitable long hard climb. Although, unlike the descent, the ascent doesn't all come at once, it's still hard work. In about 0.3K you go from 80m to 110m. This is on a footpath that then flattens out for a bit (in a wood) before another push in all taking you from 80m to 160m in about 2K. Although the rest is mainly undulating, there is a final sting: the last 0.5K is a climb from 140m to 175m to get back up to Frieth.

There's a map of the route at:

Throughout the morning, there was a wonderful atmosphere. Before the start, the Rev John Wigram gaves us his runners variant of Psalm 23 followed by a blessing. And there were people clapping, shouting and cheering almost anywhere where the route hit a road junction.

The race was held on a bright but chilly day. And when we weren't looking at the ruts and roots underneath, we had wonderful scenery to admire: the beautiful Chilterns in their Autumn colours.

In 2010, the race will take place on Sunday 17th October.

The first female finisher was the former European Cross Country Champion Hayley Yelling (now Hayley Higham). If I've left anyone out from the results, please alter or e-mail me.
