I joined the beginners group to get back into running and get fit again, after having children. I couldn’t keep up with them! I stayed because everyone is friendly and there's always someone to run with. It's kept me running, especially through the winter 🙂 I like that it's open to all types of runners, slower, faster, serious or fun. - Laura
I joined HRR shortly after moving to Oxford. I had never been a part of a running club before and I was pleasantly surprised at how welcoming HRR is to runners of all abilities. It has been a brilliant way to meet new friends, keep fit, and improve my confidence as a runner! - Esther
I’d never been a runner in my life. At the age of 47 I decided to do the Couch to 5k, and saw that it was possible and enjoyable. After a warm welcome, finding groups which suited my slower pace, being encouraged to take part in races for fun, and making friends along the way, I am still here 6 years later, now slightly obsessed with running. - Claudia
Having moved to Oxford, I decide to join a running club to meet new people. HRR club members turned out to be super friendly, and also very encouraging. I have made many friends along the way, and I am very glad to be part of this community 🏃🏽 - See Wah

We welcome all levels of runner at HRR. We encourage everyone who is interested in joining us to come along and see how we operate and participate in a few of our sessions before committing themselves to joining. The best session to join us as a first run is the Thursday evening session, held at 7pm at the OXSRAD leisure centre in Marston, Oxford. This session has a wide range of runs available and is a good way of getting to meet people.
Am I good enough to come along?
- If you can run for 50 minutes continuously (at whatever pace suits you) then you will easily be able to do one of the runs on offer.
- If you can run (however slowly) for about 30 minutes continuously then ask about our short run group on Thursday nights, which aims to build up to 50 minutes over several weeks.
- Alternatively, there is a beginner-friendly 5k social run, which takes place at 7pm every Monday. It is suitable for anyone who can run a 5k distance at any pace. Contact admin@hrr.org.uk for more information if you want to try this session instead.
- If you are an absolute beginner (just started or never having run before) then you should contact us to discuss how we can help get you started. Our coaches will be able to give you a starting programme which will get you to a basic level from which you will be able to join in our main sessions. We also have a beginners' group in the spring.
What will we do at this session?
Following a brief announcement, we split into groups of various levels, ranging from 7 to 12 minute/mile pace. There are changing and showering facilities and after your run, you can buy snacks or a beer at the bar. We encourage you to stay afterwards and chat with other members about the club, our running and your running. We think you'll find HRR a sociable and enjoyable club to join.
