One of the Saxons, Vikings & Normans timed "Challenge" events. This is a 3.275 mile loop around the Fowlmead Country Park (near Deal in Kent) - and you can do as many or as few laps in the six hour time limit as you choose.
At the end of each lap - you take a coloured band to put on your wrist, and choose to either carry on for another lap - or ring the bell to signify you've finished. Once you're done, they count up the bands, and award your finish position based on the distance you've covered.
The heavens opened before the start to treat us to a typical Bank Holiday Monday soaking, and it then proceeded to rain, with thunder & lightning, off and on for the next few hours. In spite of the puddles on the trail course becoming less and less avoidable over the course of the race, it was still a lot of fun. A couple of small hills, but otherwise pretty flat.
I was planning to run 8 laps for a marathon, but ended up joining a friend on her 7th lap when I was on my 8th to run with her through to her marathon finish. So I ended up with a top 10 finish!
The theme to this race was Cake, cake and more cake. Everyone brought a cake, and everyone had at least one slice on the way around, and more at the finish!
Very well organised with a MASSIVE medal, and goody bag consisting of chocolate, crisps, more chocolate and a can of cider! Oh, and there was cake :) |
