Comments: Top tip for how not to run a marathon - start out without any clear idea of your pace and just wing it. Quite a big positive split today (2h10m first half / 2h30m second half). The ideal way to run a marathon is to have a firm idea of your marathon pace - and run as evenly as possible throughout - even going for a negative split if possible. Today I set off about 9min/miles as I felt good, and hoped the 41 miles last weekend would stand me in good shape for this kind of pace. The first five miles were great, and even the next 5 didn't see me slow too much. Then the sun went in, I got cold, my legs got heavy and the going got tough as my pace fell away. Miles 20-24 were a slow slog, resorting to walking breaks to get my energy back into the cross-winds on the fairly exposed Milton Keynes parkrun course (with an extra ½ mile loop on each lap). Still first marathon of the week done & dusted. The next one is back at Caldecotte lake on Sunday - number 7 of this race series (there are 15 people doing all 7 days!)
