The Liverbird Double Marathon is fast, flat, totally traffic
free, and utterly in the hands of the elements. It takes
place each year from Atlantic Way in Liverpool - about a
mile south of the Liver Building at Pier Head. Heading south
along the promenade following the Mersey for 3.3 miles,
turning round and then back north to the start. 4 out &
backs make up the distance.
Ok, so it's not the most inspiring or scenic race, but it's
fun and meeting the other runners passing the other way
makes it a very social event. Being in the dead of winter
you are advised to dress for the weather - and hope for the
best.
On New Year's eve I awoke to lashing rain against my hotel
window, but by the time I joined the other 150+ runners at
the start, it had stopped and continued to brighten up
during the day. My multi-marathon strategy to run/walk went
ahead as planned (run for a mile, walk for a minute, run up
the the next mile, repeat). I felt good (in spite of a
hangover) and the blue skies and sun saw me shedding my
running jacket on the last leg.
I was very pleased with 4 hours 40 (faster than my last
double a couple of weeks previously), and rushed back to my
hotel for a kip before heading out to meet up with other
runners to see in the New Year...! |
