This is a popular and very well organised ultramarathon, from Arundel in Sussex to Winchester in Hampshire, along the South Downs Way. It was signposted for the full length of the route and 7 aid stations provided unlimited drinks, chocolate and various other snacks. But no amount of support could change the fact that this was 53.5 miles with 5500 feet of elevation. I set out super-slow and walked the hills too, but still had to push through the wall twice (at 35 and 47 miles) to get to the end, and even ran the last 3 miles in about 30 minutes, shuffling into Winchester Cathedral 143rd out of 447 men. The race motto is "more is in you", and it is right. |
