Race Walk – Midland Winter League 10K, Tamworth

Date: 30th Nov 2003
Distance: 10K
Type: Road
Comments: A bit of a ropey old race, this, but not many walking races have such a close finish. Five laps of a 2K circuit by Tamworth AC's track, with a steep curving hill towards the end of the lap. Three of us very close together at the front throughout, with me making the mistake of powering up the hill the first couple of times to gain a few metres and, so I thought, a psychological advantage. But each hill took a toll on my left hamstring . . . by laps 3 and 4 I wasn't powering up any more, and at the start of the last lap I had a few metres lead but my technique was falling to pieces. Both the guys came past me on that lap as I struggled to keep control. I took the hill gently the last time, to finish with a sprint that brought all of us home within three seconds of each other. However after finishing I discovered I had been given two warnings for a bent knee on that last lap - if my finishing sprint had also been adjudged illegal, it would be 3 'strikes' and I would have been out.
